Born in Ballyclogh,Ballyclough, County Cork]], O'Hanlon attended [[Rockwell College]] from age 12 and won a Munster Schools Senior Cup in 1942. Between 1947 and 1950, O'Hanlon was an [[Ireland national rugby union team|Ireland]] wing three-quarter during a successful period for the national team. He won a total of 12 caps and gained three tries, scoring twice on debut against [[England national rugby union team|England]] at Lansdowne Road.
